Murtaja Baseer was a Bangladeshi painter and artist known for his abstract realism themed works. He was also a poet, author, researcher, numismatist, and filmmaker. He was awarded the Ekushey Padak, Bangladesh’s second highest civilian honor, in 1980, and the Swadhinata Padak, or Independence Day Award, Bangladesh’s highest state award, in 2019.

This work is in Linocut medium by the legendary artist executed after the incident of 1952 in Dhaka ( spelled Dacca then ) to pay tribute to Late Shaheed Abul Barkat (June 16, 1927 – February 21, 1952) was a protester killed during the Bengali Language Movement which took place in the erstwhile East Pakistan (currently Bangladesh), in 1952.


He is considered a martyr ( Shaheed ) in Bangladesh. Artist Murtaja Baseer had also participated the procession and carried the bullet hit blood stained body of Abul Barkat to Dhaka Medical College Hospital when doctor pronounced Barkat dead .
